Feedback on Dress Distribution in Samoa by Suzanne

Sharing with you a few pictures of the dress distribution made in Samoa and a few words from Suzanne Cross of her experience in handing dresses to the children -
===========================================================================
Last week we were in Samoa. I was very lucky to meet with the High Chief of one of the district which contains many villages. We were in the village of Poutasi which virtually got wiped out in the Tsunami 4 years ago. While there we meet with 3 families who are very poor and have many children.
I was very privileged to receive many dresses to take with me. The next few photos are of the kids in their new clothes.
Luckily we also had some shorts for the boys.

I feel very blessed to have been able to see first hand how these simple things made such a difference.
===========================================================================

Thank you to Suzanne for handcarrying these items and for taking the time to take a few pictures. Thank you so much.
Anyone who wants to read more details on dress distributions, you can find all articles here.

Feedback from Nepal

A couple of pictures with a few dresses (I think I recognize 3 of them) sent to Nepal through Cara Clarke of Clothes for Nepal.

Feedback I received was that the children were very, very happy when they received the dresses. Some of them are saving their dresses to wear on a special festival in September similar to a Christmas festival. These children treasure the dresses so much they only want to wear them in very special occasions. It reminds me of what I used to do and feel whenever I had a new dress in my younger days or even now. I just want to keep on looking and touching the dress and dont want to wear it for fear it may get dirty or ruined. :-)

Thank you to Cara Clarke for making this dress distribution in Nepal possible. Thanks a whole lot!

Charity Drive #2 - "T-shirts for the boys of Abim" for Christmas

Today is my Dad's birthday. He lived a life full of compassion and if he was still around am sure he would be helping me sending and picking up parcels for Dress A Girl Australia. He never wanted to stay idle so he kept himself busy by helping other people. Everyone who knew him said that he had a very fulfilled life. Happy Birthday Daddy!

So it is in his memory that I am launching today the "T-shirts for Abim" charity drive. This is my second charity drive for the year and I hope a lot of you will join and make Christmas for these children something different this year. If there is anyone out there who would like to donate t-shirts, please send an email to dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com for sizes. Thank you guys!

More details about this drive will be posted soon. First I have to bring flowers for my Dad and celebrate his life with a family lunch.

'100 Days of Quilting' - More info : Quilt Size

This I believe is the most requested information regarding the '100 Days of Quilting' charity drive. What should the size of the quilt be. I would think between 120cms  - 140cms would be the right size. It will not be too bulky to roll and not too heavy and the size would fit even a 10-year old child. With this size I could fit about 12pcs in the box which I normally use and that is 12 kids kept warm in one delivery.

Please join us in keeping children in Romania warm this year. For more information, please send an email to dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com.

Distribution Feedback from Masaka Uganda June 2013

Sharing with everyone especially to those who sewed and donated the dresses and pairs of shorts a few pictures taken from a distribution made in Masaka Uganda last week during a birthday event. Some tourist friends from Holland stopped by and brought the children food to eat to enjoy the celebration.

My heartfelt thank you to Robert Luwalira of Home Sweet Orphanage for taking the time to get a few shots of a few of the children wearing the dresses and pairs of shorts. Thank you Robert for sharing the event with us through these pictures. Much appreciated.

16 years on and still keeps me warm

This is a quilt my sister made out of fabric scraps which she then gave to me 16 years ago. At the back of the quilt is the date she made it - April 1997.  Still strong and comfortable enough to keep me warm. It has endured fighting between my 2 nephews whenever they sleep over as they both want to use it as it really keeps them warm. It is a treasure to keep.
Come and join us in the "100 Days of Quilting" charity drive and make a meaningful treasure for a few kids in  Romania, keep them warm, make them feel comfort and joy during their winter season through your kindness and generosity. This drive is open to everyone whether experts or beginners. Have fun collecting fabric squares from fabric scraps and stitch it with full of love.

For details and questions, please send an email to dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com.

More parcels leaving home and more of this and that

More updates from Dress A Girl Australia this week -
  • Now that the "100 days of Quilting" charity drive is well on the way, I am also receiving more enquiries on the email one of which is on who can join the drive. So just to be clear, the charity drive to raise more quilts is open to everyone and not just for quilters. Beginners are very welcome. There are lots of websites that you can to to and get some hints and tips. Would'nt that make you proud if the very first quilt you made ends up wrapping a girl in need to keep her warm during their winter season. As I have said earlier, you can organize your friends and family, collect squares and have fun stitching them together and make one quilt or two as a group. Thank you.
This bunch of long-sleeved t-shirts, girls/boys undies and a few pairs of socks I am aiming to send to South Africa through a friend towards the end of this month. As soon as I have identified the names of the donors, a donors list will be made available.

100 dresses for the children of Sri Lanka to be handcarried by the pastors of the AOG church of Gayndah in October. 50 pairs of shorts will also be included. Donors list will be made available soon (when I have completed the allocation for the pairs of shorts for the boys).
Watch this space for more updates.

"100 Days of Quilting" Charity Drive starts today

Today is the start of the first charity drive of the year - "100 Days of Quilting" and will end on the 16th of October 2013. Everyone/anyone is invited to join and help support this charity drive by making quilts. Please help in keeping the children of Romania warm. Please help make a difference in these children’s lives, make them feel comfort and joy during their winter season through your kindness and generosity.
All quilts should be big enough to wrap even a 10 year old child and has to be new (no used ones please). A size similar to a lap quilt would probably be a good one.

You dont have to do it on your own. Gather your family and friends, collect quilt squares and have fun stitching them up. Not sure how many quilts we end up in 100 days (I will try to make at least one) but at least we know that there will be a difference in the lives of some lucky ones with your quilts. So please help spread the word.

If you have any questions, please make a comment here or send an email to dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com. And just so everyone would know making quilts is just like having a side dish. The main meal is still a dress for every little girl around the world. Thank you.

More of this and that.....

I want to make sure that what I post in my facebook page is also posted here in my blog so from now on or every now and then you will be reading some short updates of this and that...all about making a difference in this world.

  • Am thinking of starting a charity drive for 20 quilts for Romania but I will only accept new quilts. No used ones. Thinking of too many drives I think I will end up with no drive at all.
  • I think i have come up with an idea on the smaller sized dresses. Some of the dresses could fit a small 5 or 6 year old but short in length. If it is matched with a pair of longer shorts or knee length shorts i think it would look great. The dress would become a top and chances are the girl can wear it longer or outgrow the top and shorts. Ummm....more work but worth it i think.
  • Will be running simultaneous charity drives which will probably start mid-July until the end of the year. Anyone can have the option to select which charity drive they would like to support and participate in. Still busy with my handcrafting for a forthcoming market - the Dreamers Market but details will be made available very soon.  Watch for it!

Other Donations #1 - Parcel of crayons, papers and cards to colour for the children of Wilcannia

Finally I got the chance to pack boxes and boxes of mini crayons, a ream of blank papers and cards to colour for the children of Wilcannia. I was told that the kiddies love to draw and colour and I have these packs of mini crayons in my garage which I used to include when I used to make colour-me-cards. When I stopped making cards, whenever I have the time I would start melting the crayons to create animals, hearts or anything I can think of. Now it is time to give them to a younger generation that loves to draw and colour.

The ream of blank papers I took from the recycling bin at work. When we moved to a new building about 3 months ago, they were being thrown away so I took home a couple of reams to use for printing designs and patterns. There is just too much of it so am giving away one ream.
Here is the parcel that I will be sending this weekend to Wilcannia for the children to enjoy.
Also included on this parcel is a pack of erasers and a nursery rhyme book which Monika Osvald sent. Thank you Monika.

Quilt Distribution #1 - Quilts for Romania

Through the Humanitas (humanity and kindness) charity organization I am able to send these 9 quilts to Romania to keep the children warm especially during their winter season. This organization have lots of projects in Romania which deals with families, health care and education.
Here is the parcel which contains 9 quilts -
Here are the quilts inside the parcel -
donated by the following ladies from the Ladies of Kapunda sewing group -
1) Gaynor Bottcher (4x)
2) Deborah Parish (2x)
3) Margaret Cheers (1x)
4) Kathy Pfieffer (2x)

Thank you ladies for your kindness and generosity. You will be keeping 9 kiddies warm this coming winter season in Romania. Thank you.

Update on Parcels and more....

  • A reminder to everyone/anyone who wants to help distribute dresses or contemplating to distribute dresses on behalf of Dress A Girl Australia. One of the stories I was recently told by a coordinator in Nepal - They were distributing dresses to school kids and unfortunately there were 50 girls in the classroom and the donor only had 48. It broke their heart when the 2 girls cried because they didn't get any dress that is why she said that from then on they are now very careful when receiving donations to distribute. They would rather not distribute if they find out that not everyone would get one. They would like something where everyone can share and enjoy. I think that was just unfortunate but makes you think twice if and when someone starts crying. May not happen to older girls but not avoidable in the younger ones so please when sending dresses it is better to have more than to have less. I dont want to see this happen with Dress A Girl Australia.
  • Is there anyone who lives in Killara NSW or anywhere near Killara and willing to pick up fabrics being donated to make into dresses? I am unable to pick up these donations as I already have a previous engagement this weekend(and my car needs to be registered this weekend too) so if anyone would like fabric materials to use and lives around the area, please contact me at dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com or make a comment on this posting. The fabrics being donated is more than just a bundle and needs to be picked up soon. Thank you.
  • Thank you to Laura Jennings for generously donating fabrics from her late mother's estate to Frances Cornish. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • I received a notification tonight that the parcel of dresses, tshirts and undies I sent sometime end of March to Mbale Uganda has arrived. Looking at the images I thought I sent pairs of shorts but looks like I didnt but I did send t-shirts. Preparing my next parcel this time it would include shorts for the boys.
  • I will be sending 3 of the quilts i received to Romania so i would know how long it will take for a parcel to arrive. I know Uganda takes at least 10 weeks to get there. These 3 quilts will keep at least 3 children warm during winter.
  • If there are any fabric shops/owners out there who would like to donate any grey or black fabrics that can be made into pairs of shorts for 100 boys (as uniforms) between the sizes of 5 to 9 it would be much appreciated if you could please let me know or you can get in touch with me here or at dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com. Thanks a whole lot!
(P.S. Please consider carefully when making a donation as I cannot issue any tax deductible receipt. Thank you.)

On my way back to Sydney last week I was thinking of making 150 christmas bags for the children of a community( a new location) I found in the Philippines which would greatly benefit from the items that have been donated to Dress A Girl Australia and perhaps more if I can find the time to organize and do it. It is for a community of children who I believe will never be recipients of something that would make a difference to their lives unless you know where they are. Am pretty sure this kind of help and/or gifts will never reached them and I would like them to at least get a taste of what children in other locations feel when they get to receive something which they can call their own and what better time to give and for them to receive.... at Christmas time.

Donation Acknowledgement FY13/06 #84 - From the two Bettys

Last but not the least number 84 on the list and the last parcel for the month of June is a parcel of 20 dresses and 22 small bags from the two Bettys - Betty Barrett and Betty Paull. I need to think of something made out of fabric scraps that I can put into these small bags. As much as possible, I want to make use of fabric scraps to give away this Christmas. And the dresses goes straight to my Cambodia box.
Thank you so much dear bettys. You continue to amaze me. Thank you for your kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity. It is much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Donation Acknowledgement FY13/06 #83 - Dresses, Shorts, head scarves from Monika

Number 83 on the list and second to the last parcel for the month of June are dresses, pairs of shorts, head scarves, pack of undies, teddy bear softies and a couple of nursery books from Monika Osvald. What a list!
One of the books am going to send to the children of Wilcannia together with the box of crayons I have as I was told they love to draw and colour.
Here are the items I received from Monika this time -
To Monika, thank you so much for the items. I love the head scarves and I think you just gave me an idea for my Christmas bag. If possible, I want to make use of scraps and the head scarf is such a great idea. Thank you. Thank you for your unwavering support of dressing girls around the world. Much appreciated.

Donation Acknowledgement FY13/06 #82 - Parcels just keep on coming from the Ladies of Kapunda S.A.

Number 82 on the list and for the month of June will be quite a long list of acknowledgements with the number of parcels I have received again from the Ladies of Kapunda South Australia. Dresses, pairs of shorts, socks, undies which I decided not to count at this time so I can finish off my June donations but believe me it filled a bag. I have never seen so many undies in my life. I think I have more than enough to pin an undie to every dress that I have received. Thank you so much! And my heartfelt thanks as well to the ladies who sent in quilt blankets.

To start the parcels rolling here are the images of the dresses, pairs of shorts, socks and undies from 4 different parcels and if I have made a mistake in the names, my apologies.
- from Claire Clarke, Leeanne Wollard, Loris Pullen, Helen Blane, Chris Redden and Leeza Jeffrees, Loretta Vadic, Dianne Cain, Shirley Bell and Dianne Sandenso. Undies came from another group of ladies - from Dianne Cain, Kathy Pfeiffer and Jan Tompkins. Undies came from Dianne Cain, Kathy Pfieffer and Jan Tompkins.
Another parcel contained the quilt blankets coming from Gaynor Bottcher(4x), Deborah Parish(2x), Margaret Cheers(1x), Kathy Pfieffer(2x) which brings to a total of 9.

I am so glad that everyone is enjoying sewing dresses. Thank you to all who sponsored dresses that helped raised postage funds for the Ladies of Kapunda Sewing group and my heartfelt thank you to all the Ladies of Kapunda Sewing Group and the Kapunda Quilters for their unwavering support of this campaign, for their time, effort, generosity and kindness. It is very much appreciated. Thank you.
